The Taming of Shrew.II

After the wedding, they go to Verona, Petruccio starts taming Katherine. He turns everything against her will, ironically, under pretense of concern for her wellbeing. He prevents her from eating or sleeping for days, saying he could not let her eat his inferior food or sleep in his poorly made-up bed. And he shows her beautiful dresses but denying her the chance to own them. He says they are not pretty enough for her.

Meanwhile in Padua, Lucentio wins Bianca’s heart. The other suitor, Hortensio, resolves to marry a dowager. Tranio proposes a huge sum of money to Baptista for him to approve of Lucentio. Baptista agrees, but requires Lucentio’s father to confirm the amount for the marriage to take place. Tranio and Lucentio find an old man to play the role of Lucentio’s father.

Soon, Petruccio and Katherine return to Padua to visit Baptista. Her willfulness now abating, Katherine agrees that all is as Petruccio says. They meet Lucentio’s real father, Vincentio, who is on his way to Padua to see his son. Arriving in Padua, Vincentio is shock to find that Tranio is masquerading as Lucentio. Amidst this confusion, Bianca and Lucentio arrive, now wedded. Both Vincentio and Baptista agree to the marriage.
At the banquet following Hortensio’s wedding to the dowager, everyone is shocked, seeing Katherine seemingly tamed, obeying everything that Petruccio says. The three new husbands stage a contest to see which of the new wives will obey first when summoned. When Lucentio summons Bianca, she sends a message back, refusing to obey. But when Petruccio summons his wife, Katherine comes immediately, thus allowing Petruccio a big victory.

The Taming of Shrew

A gentleman, who likes to play tricks in other people, find Christopher Sly, a drunk homeless who falls asleep in a corner of the city. The gentleman takes Sly to their castle, and accommodates the homeless in their best room and arranges to him a beautiful fake wife. Upon awakening, Sly is convinced that he is a noble, who had been insane for fifteen years. They decide entertaining him with a play, called "The Taming of the Shrew."
In Padua, a rich young man, Lucentio, accompanied by his two servants, Tranio and Biondello, arrives to attend the local university. When he sets eyes on Bianca, a beautiful, sweet-tempered young lady, Lucentio instantly falls in love. But he is confronted with two problems: Bianca already has two suitors, Gremio and Hortensio, and her wealthy father, Baptista Minola, has declared that she may not be courted until after her older sister, the ill-tempered Katherine, is married. Lucentio disguises himself as Bianca’s Latin tutor, just so he can be in her company. But the other suitor, Hortensio also disguises as Bianca’ music teacher. While Lucentio is at his pretense, his servant, Tranio, dresses up as Lucentio and begins to talk with Baptista about the possibility of him marrying Bianca.

The problem with Katherine not having a suitor is solved when a brash man from Verona arrives in Padua to find himself a rich wife who, upon learning about Katherine, declares he does not care what she is like as long as she is rich. The next day, he goes to Baptista’s house to meet her, and instantly, they engage in a verbal duel. Petruccio tells her she is to marry him, whether she likes it or not. Then he goes to Baptista, telling him falsely that Katherine has agreed to marry him on Sunday. The wedding will happen.

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare is considered one of the most important playwrights and writers of all time. His literary texts are truly pieces of art and remained alive until the present day, often being portrayed in theater, television, cinema and literature.

The main purpose of this blog is, again, portraying the work of this genius, Shakespeare, transcribing it to the Internet users, so they can understand and absorb its messages easily.

We chose, then, the comedy, The Taming of Shrew, a classic story about positioning of male and female in society.
